8 days in Southern Italy – Any Ideas?

Hi,

We are planning an 8 day driving trip to southern Italy at the start of June. We fly into Palermo in Sicily, then fly back to London from Naples.

We were thinking a couple of days touring around Sicily, then a few on the Amalfi Coast. But any advice on the areas/regions in between, or even advice in general on the south of Italy would be much appreciated.

One caveat is we do not want to be driving too much so it’ll be a compromise between having the car to look around, but also having time to relax and walk around towns and cities.

In terms of attractions, we are open to all suggestions – a variety of ruins, culture and coastlne/beaches is roughly what we are after.

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

So much to see and explore in both areas, I would suggest splitting the time equally between the two, and I’m sure you’ll still not cover everything

This link (below) is a list of things to do in southern Italy, it can give you some ideas. Southern Italy is beautiful.

    Sorrento is boring!!!
    Go straight to Naples!
Yo have fun, food, culture, shops and sea in one!

Go to Naples, and help the people there to clean up their rubbage.

What’s very useful is the train that goes around the Bay of Naples, the Circumvesuviano (between the city of Naples and Sorrento). It stops at Pompeii, and you really should not miss Pompeii, the best preserved Roman ruins you will ever see. Bring a good hat to protect you from the sun, and plenty of sunscreen.

I spent a week in Naples, and I loved it. It is really a lovely city – I know there are problems there again at the moment, but I absolutely loved it, the people were particularly friendly and charming in a country known for the friendliness of its people, and the Mergulina (spelling?) part of the city and the seafront are stunning. I will go back there …

Sorrento was nice, as was Positano, where I would happily spend a month if I could. If you go to Positano, bring good walking shoes. I would have liked to go to Amalfi, but the roads are incredibly twisty and we were going by bus and I don’t have a good stomach for travelling. Your car would be useful for travelling around Sorrento and the Amalfi coast, but the signposting in Naples itself is very bad and the traffic can best be described as a spectator sport, so I would not recommend taking a car into Naples.

You could also check out the islands of Capri, and we went to Ischia, which was very very nice – and unfortunately it was the only day during our holiday that it rained! I remember seeing great beaches on Ischia.
